Proof of payment

I’ve noticed that a lot of sites have a page dedicated to showing the supposed transactions that prove they pay the coin they’re supposed to. My question is, how does a transaction between two anonymous strings of numbers and letters prove that the site owner did, in fact, send the coin to the customer? Is this just another ploy of scammers to instill a false sense trustworthiness? Or is there a way to decipher the transaction to actually prove something?

use a blockchain explorer - there are quite a few trustworthy ones out there. If the buyer can provide the transaction id for the funds they claim to have sent, you can verify that transaction on the block exchange. Well, and if they paid it, you would also see the coins in your wallet.
